The fire is now under control and on advice there is no threat to the community our school will be operating as normal this week.
The Environment Protection Authority is monitoring air quality, which is currently assessed as very good. Smoke can affect people's health. Parents of children with pre-existing heart or lung conditions (including asthma) are reminded to be vigilant, keep their medication close by and follow their treatment plan.
We are continuing to clean up some of the light ash at our school which was caused by the fire. For more information on the fire, including links to health information, please visit the 'News and updates' section of the Environment Protection Authority website: www.epa.vic.gov.au
If you have any further questions, please contact the school during regular hours.
INFORMATION FROM HUME CITY COUNCIL
As you may be aware, last week a fire broke out at a recycling plant in Coolaroo. The fire is currently under control and Hume City Council, along with other agencies is now working to manage pollution in Merlynston Creek and the lake at Jack Roper Reserve.
As a local school in the area, please share the following important health information with the staff and families that are part of your community.
All contact with water in the Merlyston Creek or in the Jack Roper Reserve Lake should be avoided due to potential health risks from E. Coli – a form of bacteria – as levels in these areas have been recorded above acceptable limits.
People should obey the water quality signs erected at the reserve and should avoid fishing in the creek or lake until further information is available.
Dead fish may be visible in nearby waterways due to low oxygen levels in the water. Water authorities are pumping the waterways to bring the levels back to an acceptable level.
Hume City Council will continue ongoing management of the lake at Jack Roper Reserve.
We will continue to work with relevant agencies to monitor the condition of the creek to ensure impact on the community and the environment is minimised.
Please contact Customer Service on 9205 2200 if you have any enquiries.
